ASA Section on Economic Sociology
- The purpose of the Section on Economic Sociology is to promote the sociological study of
the production, distribution, exchange, and consumption of scarce goods and services. It
does so by facilitating the exchange of ideas, information, and resources among economic
sociologists, by stimulating research on matters of both theoretical and policy interest,
by assisting the education of undergraduate and graduate students, and by communicating
research findings to policy makers and other external audiences.
Economic Sociology - Economic sociology is
a distinct subfield. It is ecumenical with respect to method and theory. Economic
sociologists use the full range of qualitative and quantitative methods. No theoretical
approach dominates; the field is inclusive, eclectic, and pluralistic.
ASA Section on Political Economy
of the World Systems - The purpose of the Section on Political Economy of the
World-Systems (PEWS) is to pursue the study of world systems over long periods of time.
PEWS seeks to foster the
understanding of difference and offers an integrated analysis of the political economy and
its social bases.
ASA Section:
Organizations, Occupations, and Work - The purpose of the Section on
Organizations, Occupations, and Work is to foster the development of these branches of
sociology through the advancement of theory and research, and through the communication of
knowledge. The Section focuses on concepts and theories from the various social sciences
as they apply to problems of organizations, occupational roles and the changing nature of
work.

better jobs, and ensuring the adequacy of America's workplaces. It is responsible for the
administration and enforcement of over 180 federal statutes.

- The Bureau of Labor Statistics is an agency within the U.S. Department of Labor.
AFSCME - American Federation of
State, County, and Municipal Employees - Workers organize labor unions
primarily to secure better wages and better working conditions. We hold that they also
organize in order to participate in the decisions which affect them at work. One of the
fundamental tenets of democratic government is the consent of the
governed. Unions are an extension of that idea. Union members are both workers and
citizens.
The Institute of
Industrial Relations - University of California - Berkeley - The
Institute of Industrial Relations (IIR) is an "Organized Research Unit" of the
University of California at Berkeley. IIR was founded in 1945. Its first director
was UC President Emeritus Clark Kerr. The current Director is James R. Lincoln, and the
Associate Directors are David Levine and Kim Voss. IIR brings together faculty from
several academic departments and supports multi-disciplinary research about labor and
employment relations.

- The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) is not a job placement service, but an international
toll-free consulting service that provides information about job accommodations and the
employability of people with disabilities. JAN also provides information regarding the
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

LaborNet was founded in 1991 to build a democratic communication network for the labor
movement. LaborNet's founders believe that the new communication technology must be put to
use to revitalize and rebuild the labor movement. To that end we established the first
regular Labor News web page in the United States. We have continued to work at building up
LaborNet not only the in the United States but internationally through the Association Of
Progressive Communication (APC) and with other independent labor communicators on the
Internet. LaborNets are now established in Canada, United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, and
Korea.
