ASA Section
on Sociology of Education - The purpose of the Section on Sociology of
Education is to foster the development of this aspect of sociology and its application
through the study of the ways in which formal schooling influences individuals and the
ways society affects educational institutions.
Sociology of Education - The
sociology of education has been an important part of the development of the discipline of
sociology, with its origins in the ideas of Emile Durkheim, who was a professor of
sociology and education at the
Sorbonne at the turn of the 20th century. Sociologists of education study the myriad
connections between education and society at all levels of the education system, including
primary, secondary, and postsecondary.
ASA Section on Undergraduate Education
- The purpose of the Section on Undergraduate Education is to provide a professional
organization for improving the teaching of sociology from the high school through graduate
level. It encourages and facilitates innovative and effective pedagogy and research. This
Section addresses the common
and unique needs of faculty in two-year and four-year colleges and universities.
Department of Education -
The responsibilities of the U.S. Department of Education generally fall into six important
areas: 1.Providing national leadership and partnerships to address critical issues in
American education, 2.Serving as a national clearinghouse of good ideas, 3.Helping
families pay for college, 4.Helping local communities and schools meet the most pressing
needs of their students, 5.Preparing students for employment in a changing economy, and
6.Ensuring nondiscrimination by recipients of federal education funds.
American Association of
Community Colleges - The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) has
been a national voice for two-year associate degree granting institutions since its
inception in 1920. Located in the National Center for Higher Education in Washington,
D.C., AACC works with other higher education associations, the federal government,
Congress, and other national associations that represent the public and private sectors to
promote the goals of community colleges and higher education.
EDUCAUSE - EDUCAUSE is an
international, nonprofit association whose mission is to help shape and enable
transformational change in higher education through the introduction, use, and management
of information resources and technologies in teaching, learning, scholarship, research,
and institutional management.
The Center for Education Reform
- The Center for Education Reform [CER] is a national, independent, non-profit advocacy
organization founded in 1993 to provide support and guidance to parents and teachers,
community and civic groups, policymakers and grassroots leaders, and all who are working
to bring fundamental reforms to their schools.
Commonwealth of Learning - COL
- Founded in 1987 by Commonwealth Heads of Government at their meeting in Vancouver,
Canada, The Commonwealth of Learning has a mandate to encourage the development and
sharing of open learning/distance education materials, expertise and technologies, and
other resources for learners throughout the Commonwealth and other countries.
Council of Great City Schools
- An organization of the nation's largest urban public school systems, advocating K-12
education in inner-city schools, and governed by superintendents and board of education
members from 58 cities across the country.
Diversity University Inc.
- Diversity University Main Campus is extraordinary and unique as the first MOO to be
designed specifically for classroom use. DU Main is a project of DUETS, Inc., which is a
501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization dedicated to meeting the on-line distance
education learning needs of individuals and institutions.
The George Lucas Educational Foundation
- The George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF) creates media that promote a vision of
learning where students are challenged and engaged, have access to interactive
technologies, and are supported by inspired teachers and involved parents and communities.
The Globewide Network
Academy - The Globewide Network Academy is dedicated to the promote access to
educational opportunities for anybody, anywhere. To do this, GNA pioneers and develops
distance learning relationships and facilities for the worldwide public to use.
GNA's tools are created under the open-source, copyleft philosophy, and we encourage
others to copy our products and build upon them in the spirit of the open source
community. The Globewide Network Academy is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation
incorporated in the state of Texas.
International Association for
Evaluation of Educational Achievement -The
International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) is an
independent, international cooperative of research centers. Its mission is to conduct
comparative studies that focus on educational policies and practices so as to enhance
learning within and across
systems of education. IEA is commited to a cycle of studies of learning in the basic
school subjects and to additional studies of particular interest to its members.
National Council for Social
Studies - Founded in 1921, National Council for the Social Studies has grown to
be the largest association in the country devoted solely to social studies education. NCSS
engages and supports educators in strengthening and advocating social studies. With
members in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 69 foreign countries, NCSS serves
as an umbrella organization for elementary, secondary, and college teachers of history,
geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and
law-related education.
Plugged In -
Plugged In, established in 1992, is a community technology center with a mission to ensure
that everyone in East Palo Alto, California has the opportunity to fully benefit from all
that the information revolution has to offer. We operate three programs: Plugged In
Enterprises, Plugged In Greenhouse, and the Technology Access Center. Plugged In
Enterprises trains teenagers in the latest web design technology. The teenagers use their
skills to operate a web design
business that creates web pages for community members and paying commercial clients.
Clients include Pacific Bell, OICW, and Sun Microsystems.
Urban Education Web
- UEweb offers manuals, brief articles, annotated bibliographies, reviews and summaries of
outstanding publications, and conference announcements in urban education. Many items in
UEweb are published by the ERIC Clearinghouse on Urban Education and are available for
free or a nominal charge, as described in its publication list. UEweb is presented by the
ERIC Clearinghouse on Urban Education (ERIC/CUE) and is funded by the U.S. Department of
Education, Office of Education Research and Improvement.
