ASA Section on Environment and
Technology - the purpose of the Section on Environment and Technology is to promote
sociological research and professional activity in relation to environmental and
technological issues. The term "environment" is understood to encompass both the
natural and built environment. The term "technology" is to be understood to
include the origins and consequences of technology, sociological aspects of technological
risk and
assessment, the impacts of technology on social behavior, organization, and environment.
American Forests
- American Forests is the nation's oldest nonprofit citizen conservation organization,
founded in 1875 by citizens concerned about waste and abuse of the nation's forests. Our
mission today remains helping people improve the environment with trees and forests. We
work to ensure a sustainable future for our nation's forests - both urban and rural -
through national and international tree planting, forest policy, urban forestry, and
popular programs, such as The National Register of Big Trees and Famous & Historic
Trees.
BC Wild -
BC Wild is committed to protecting the web of life in British Columbia by promoting the
ecologically
and socially responsible use of land and marine resources. Through a shared vision of
maintaining our wilderness, forests, marine resources and diversity of wildlife, we
continue to create and build upon an atmosphere of cooperation and inclusion with
environmentally-concerned citizens in British Columbia.
Centre for Economic and
Social Studies on the Environment (CESSE) - The CESSE was created following the
first United Nations Conference on human environment, which was held in Stockholm in 1972.
It is made up of a pluri-disciplinary research team which devotes its activities to the
qualitative and quantitative evaluation of economic-environmental interactions. It is
located at 44, Avenue Jeanne, CP 124, B-1050 Bruxelles, Belgique.
Consortium for International
Earth Science Information Network - CIESIN was established in 1989 as a
non-profit, non-governmental organization to provide information that would help
scientists, decision-makers, and the public better understand their changing world. CIESIN
specializes in global and regional network development, science data management, decision
support, and training, education and technical consultation services. CIESIN is the World
Data Center A (WDC-A) for Human Interactions in the Environment.
SEDAC -
SEDAC, the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center, is one of the Distributed Active
Archive
Centers (DAACs) in the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) of the
U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. SEDAC focuses on human interactions in
the environment. Its mission is to develop and operate applications that support the
integration of socioeconomic and Earth science data and to serve as an "Information
Gateway" between the Earth and social sciences.

Department of Energy,
Energy Information, Products, and Programs - The Energy Information, Products,
and Programs web site is the home page of the Energy Resources Board of the U.S.
Department of Energy. Its purpose is to provide a consolidated and integrated home page
for the member offices: Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Energy Information
Administration, Fossil Energy, Nuclear Energy, Policy, and Science. At this site you will
find energy data, analysis products, information on energy technology, energy efficiency,
outreach programs, links to the home pages of individual offices and national labs, points
of contact, links to related sites, and a submission form for suggestions.
Department of Energy -
Explorer - includes DOE Directives, DOE Directives Review & Comment
(REVCOM), DOE Technical Standards, and other DOE Documents. A Los Alamos National
Laboratory server.
Earth First! Britain - EF! is a network of
autonomous local groups, (63 in the UK). It has no central office or paid officers and no
decision making boards. It was set up in this country in July 1991 and has been the main
network of radical eco-activists since then. EF! is active in 13 countries, (mostly in the
1st and 2nd world).
Earth First! Journal - The
Earth First! Journal is published by an editorial staff from within the Earth First!
movement.
Earth First! Journal is a forum for the no-compromise environmental movement.
Responsibility rests with the individual
authors and correspondents. The contents do not necessarily represent the viewpoint of
this newspaper, the Earth First!
movement, local Earth First! groups or individual Earth First!ers.
Earth First! Headwaters Forest Direct
Action Campaign - Headwaters Forest contains the world's last large remnants of
unprotected ancient redwood forest. Two centuries ago, the climax redwood forest blanketed
the Pacific Coast from
southern Oregon to Big Sur, California. A century and a half of liquidation logging has
destroyed more than 96 percent of that forest.
Earth Island
Institute - Earth Island Institute (EII), founded in 1982 by veteran
environmentalist David Brower, fosters the efforts of creative individuals by providing
organizational support in developing projects for the conservation, preservation, and
restoration of the global environment. EII provides activists the freedom to develop
program ideas, supported by services to help them pursue those ideas, with a minimum of
bureaucracy.

Ecological Society of
America - The Ecological Society of America (ESA) is a non-partisan, nonprofit

increase the resources available for the conduct of ecological science; and ensure
the appropriate use of ecological science in environmental decision making by enhancing

Development - Ecotrust was created in 1991 by a small group of diverse people

National Environmental Trust
- The National Environmental Trust is functioning as the resource for several major public
education campaigns about environmental issues. Through a network of grassroots organizers

we are getting the word out about the importance of:
reacting to new scientific evidence about global climate change; concern for our

EnviroLink
Library - the EnviroLink Library, the most comprehensive resource of
environmental information available on the Internet. We've organized the EnviroLink

is categorized by types of resources (organizations, publications, etc.) and environmental

EnviroWeb Support - The
EnviroLink Network's EnviroWeb program offers free Internet services to non-profit
organizations within the environmental and animal rights communities. EnviroWeb provides
these services to any organization within these communities, regardless of their politics
or opinions.
Friends of the Earth
- Friends of the Earth is the largest international network of environmental groups in the
world, represented in 61 countries. One of the leading environmental pressure groups in
the UK. A unique network of campaigning local groups, working in 250 communities in
England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Friends of the Earth Trust is a charity which
commissions detailed research and provides extensive information and educational
materials.
Friends of the Environment Foundation
- In 1990, the Canada Trust Friends of the Environment Foundation was established with the
vision that when people join together, every positive action, no matter how large or
small, contributes to the overall health of our environment. Friends of the Environment
Foundation is a non-profit organization established by Canada Trust that provides funding
support for initiatives that make a positive impact on the Canadian environment through
two sources: the locally focused Friends of the Environment Community Fund (established in
1990); and the nationally focused Friends of the Environment Canada Fund (established
June, 1997).

and Portal - This forest conservation informational campaign has been active for over
ten years and represent an ongoing experiment in ecological advocacy using technological

carried out as a Ph.D. research project and as an international rainforest NGO

Department of the Interior
- The Department's mission is (1) to encourage and provide for the appropriate management,
preservation, and operation of the Nation's public lands and natural resources for use and
enjoyment both now and in the future; (2) to carry out related scientific research and
investigations in support of these objectives; (3) to develop and use resources in an
environmentally sound manner, and provide an equitable return on these resources to the
American taxpayer; and (4) to carry out trust responsibilities of the U.S. Government with

International Society
for Environmental Ethics - The International Society of Environmental Ethics
(ISEE) was founded with its first programs and business meeting on December 28, 1990 at
the American Philosophical Association, Eastern
Division, Boston, in a packed room. ISEE now maintains this website, which includes the
largest bibliography in the world on environmental ethics, over 7,000 entries. Newsletters
over the last ten years are also available here, and by consulting these a full historical

Living Earth -
Living Earth Foundation is an international, non-governmental organisation (NGO), which
encourages people to learn and work together to resolve the environmental issues that
concern them. Living Earths programmes address a wide range of issues from pollution
to bio-diversity, from population to cultural diversity and from agricultural practices to
energy consumption.
National Audubon Society
- The mission of the National Audubon Society is to conserve and restore natural
ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the
earth's biological diversity. Founded in 1905, the National Audubon Society is named for
John James Audubon (1785-1851), famed ornithologist, explorer, and wildlife artist.
National
Environmental Coalition of Native Americans - NECONA - NECONA's goals are: to
educate Indians and Non-Indians about the health dangers of radioactivity and the
transportion of nuclear waste on America's rails and roads; to network with Indian and
Non-Indian environmentalists to develop grassroots counter-movement to the well-funded
efforts of the nuclear industry; and to declare Tribal NUCLEAR FREE ZONES across the
nation.
National Council for Science and
the Environment - The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE)
works to improve the scientific basis for environmental decisionmaking. Guided by the
needs of stakeholders, NCSE educates society about the importance of comprehensive
scientific programs that integrate cross-cutting research with knowledge assessments,
education, information dissemination, and training.
National Parks and
Conservation Association - NPCA's mission, to protect and enhance America's
National Park System for present and future generations, can only be achieved through a
well-educated and committed park constituency. Public education through our publications
and our public outreach to inspire activism is key to our
efforts.
The Nature Conservancy -
Founded in 1951, The Nature Conservancy is the world's leading private, International
conservation group. We preserve habitats and species by saving the lands and waters they
need to survive. The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve plants, animals and
natural communities that represent the diversity of life
on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.
Rainforest Action Network
- Since it was founded in 1985, the Rainforest Action Network has been working to protect
tropical rainforests and the human rights of those living in and around those forests.
From the beginning, the Network has played a key role in strengthening the worldwide
rainforest conservation movement through supporting activists in tropical countries as
well as organizing and mobilizing consumers and community action groups throughout the
United States. Our first challenge was to bring the plight of the rainforests to public
attention through education, communication, and direct action.
Save The Earth Foundation
- The Save the Earth Foundation is a non-profit public benefit corporation that seeks to
raise the public's awareness of environmental issues by funding environmental research and
education programs at colleges and universities. Research grants from the Save the Earth
Foundation will help slow - and ultimately reverse - our planet's deterioration.
Sierra Club - n
the Spring of 1892, a determined band of men and women, led by the conservationist John
Muir, made a

Solid Waste Association of North
America - Educating todays solid waste professional through its
Specialty Symposia and Publications, SWANA helps these individuals to upgrade their
skills, to provide them with the ammunition to target new opportunities and meet the new

biological diversity that we all need to survive.

Yosemite Fund -
The goal of The Yosemite Fund is to help keep Yosemite National Park's beauty alive, now
and for future generations. We provide private funding for projects in the park that
government funds just can't cover. Fund grants are given for managing wildlife, restoring
habitat, repairing trails, providing new educational exhibits, and much more.
National Center for Atmosperic Research -
The National Center for Atmospheric Research, NCAR, was established in
1960 to serve as a focus for research on atmospheric and related science problems and is
recognized for its scientific contributions to our understanding of the earth system,
including climate change, changes in atmospheric composition, Earth-Sun interactions,
weather formation and forecasting, and the impacts of all of these components on human
societies.
