ASA Section
on Medical Sociology - The purpose of the Section on Medical Sociology is to
foster the development of
sociology in the field of health through the organized interchange of ideas, teaching
experiences, research programs, and results. The Section on Medical Sociology examines the
phenomena of health and illness, the social organization of health care delivery, and
differential access to medical resources.
Medical Sociology - brings
together social and behavioral scientists from a variety of backgrounds who share an
interest in the social contexts of health, illness, and health care. Central topics
include the subjective experience of health and
illness; political, economic, and environmental circumstances that threaten health; and
societal forces that impact on the medical care system and on people's responses to
illness.

Medical Sociology Group - The BSA Medical
Sociology Group exists to promote scholarship and communication in

ASA Section
on Sociology of Mental Health - The purpose of the Section on Sociology of
Mental Health is to provide an integrative supportive framework for research on social
factors in mental health. The Mental Health Section considers issues ranging from serious
mental disorders to subjective indicators of quality of life. The focus is on research and
theory pertaining to social processes and mental health functioning.
American Medical Association
(AMA) - AMA's work includes the development and promotion of standards in
medical practice, research, and education; strong advocacy agenda on behalf of patients
and physicians; and the commitment to providing accurate, timely information and discourse
on matters important to the health of America.
American Medical
Women's Association (AMWA) - The American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) is
an organization of 10,000 women physicians and medical students dedicated to serving as
the unique voice for women's
health and the advancement of women in medicine. AMWA was founded in 1915, at a time when
women physicians were an under-represented minority.
Action on Smoking and Health (ASH)
- Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) is a national nonprofit legal action and educational
organization fighting for the rights of nonsmokers against the many problems of smoking.
ASH uses the tremendous power of the law to represent nonsmokers in courts and legislative
bodies and before regulatory agencies.
ASH was formed in 1967 by Executive Director John F. Banzhaf III, and a distinguished body
of physicians, attorneys and other prominent citizens who saw the need for an effective
organization to represent nonsmokers' rights.
American Cancer Society
- The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health
organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing
cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education,
advocacy, and service.
Americans for Nonsmokers'
Rights - Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights is the only national lobbying
organization dedicated to nonsmokers' rights, taking on the tobacco industry at all levels
of government to protect nonsmokers
from secondhand smoke and youth from tobacco addiction. ANR puruses an action-oriented
program of policy and legislation.
American Red Cross -
The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its
Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross
Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare
for, and respond to emergencies.
Asian and Pacific Islander
Wellness Center - The mission of Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center is
to
educate, support, empower and advocate for Asian & Pacific Islander (A&PI)
communities -- particularly A&Ps living with or at-risk for HIV/AIDS. Asian &
Pacific Islander Wellness Center (A&PIWC) is the oldest and most comprehensive,
non-profit HIV/AIDS services organization in North America targeting Asian and Pacific
Islander (A&PI) communities.
Children
with Diabetes - Children with Diabetes is now part of Diabetes123, a new

non-profit organization comprised of medical professionals and concerned citizens
dedicated to restoring confidentiality to health care. We work to raise public awareness
through advocacy and public education, prevent infringements on privacy and pass true
confidentiality legislation.
Demographic and Health
Surveys - Demographic and health surveys provide information on family
planning, maternal and child health, child survival, HIV/AIDS/STIs (sexually transmitted
infections), and reproductive health. In addition, DHS+ can assist with improving on-going
data collection efforts, such as health information systems, to efficiently meet
information needs in a cost-effective manner.
