ASA Section on Sociology of
Religion - The Sociology of Religion Section encourages and enhances research,
teaching,
and other professional concerns in the study of religion and society. Through its various
activities, it promotes communication, collaboration, and consultation among scholars in
the field, as well as working to create links between sociology of religion and other
sociological specialties.
Association for the Sociology of Religion
- The Association for the Sociology of Religion (ASR) is an international scholarly
association that seeks to advance theory and research in the sociology of religion. Formed
in 1938 as the American Catholic Sociological Society, the Association of Sociology of
Religion traces its roots to scholars in search of a hospitable place for both empirical
study and social criticism animated by the social teachings of the church.
Society for the Scientific Study of Religion
- The Society for the Scientific Study of Religion was founded in 1949 by scholars in
religion and social science. Its purpose is to stimulate and communicate significant
scientific research on religious institutions and religious experience. Scholars from all
fields of study who are interested in the scientific exploration of religion are invited
to join the Society.
Religious Research Association - The Goals of the
Religious Research Association: To increase understanding of the function of religion in
persons and society through application of social scientific and other scholarly methods;
To promote the circulation, interpretation and use of the findings of religious research
among religious bodies and other interested groups; To cooperate with other professional
societies, groups and individuals interested in the study of
religion; and To aid in the professional development of religious researchers.
American Academy of Religion - From a base of
four founding members in 1909, the AAR has grown to 9,000 members today. Members are
largely faculty at colleges, universities, and divinity schools in North America, with a
growing percentage located at institutions of higher education in Asia, Africa, and
Europe.
American Religion Data Archive - free resource
available to researchers interested in quantitative data on American religion. The ARDA
was established to meet four goals: Preserve data; Improve access to data; Increase the
use of data; Allow comparisons across data files.
Journal for the
Scientific Study of Religion - The Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion (JSSR)
began in 1961 and is now published quarterly under the auspices of the Society for the
Scientific Study of Religion. JSSR was founded in 1949 by students of religion and of
social science in order to stimulate and communicate significant scientific research on
religious institutions and experience.
